Anwesha wins Asian Youth U-14 girls chess title

Anwesha Mishra made Odisha proud by winning the title in the under-14 girls section of the Asian Youth Chess Championship, held at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia from April 6 to 14. Standard IX student of Cuttack-based St Josephs Girls High School, Anwesh, in fact, secured the title with a round to spare.

She eventually finished with eight points out of possible nine. Remaining unbeaten, Anwesha won seven games and drew the remaining two. With the title triumph she not only became a Fide Master (FM) but also gained 102.4 points, thus increasing her total to 1941. Anwesha finished fourth in blitz and 32nd in rapid events of the championship.

India bagged a total of eight medals, which included three gold, two silver and three bronze. R Praggnanandhaa (U-12, 7.5/9), Divya Deshmukh (U-12G, 8/9) won the other two gold medals while remaining undefeated. Silver medals were won by P Iniyan (U-16, 6.5/9) and Harshita Guddanti (U-15G, 7/9). Bronze medals were claimed by Aditya Mittal (U-10, 7/9), Khushi Khandelwal (U-14G, 6.5/9) and R Vaishali (U-16G, 7/9).
